Blessing of the School Chapel of the Annunciation
The Archbishop of Southwark, Peter Smith, visited Bishop Challoner School, Shortlands, on Friday 24th March 2017 to celebrate holy Mass and to bless the new icons in the school’s Chapel of the Annunciation. The parish priests of St Edmund of Canterbury Church, Beckenham and St Joseph’s Church, Bromley and several other priests from the deanery will concelebrate the Mass with the Archbishop.
This visit by the Archbishop of Southwark coincides with the completion of the extensive refurbishment programme in the school chapel begun during the summer of 2015. The day of the blessing is the eve of The Annunciation of the Lord (25th March) and it is also a regular school day so the whole school community was present to participate in a very special, spiritual occasion at the heart of their school.
The Mass and blessing was followed by a Reception and Buffet lunch where Archbishop Peter and the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Ian F Payne met pupils and other members of the Bishop Challoner School community and invited guests.
‘I hope and pray that this beautiful chapel will remain a spiritual haven, an inspirational setting in the daily life of the whole school community and a place to spend time quietly with God.’ The Most Reverend Peter Smith.
During the afternoon, Nicola Juha Mousallam, the icon painter from Bethlehem Icon Centre, took workshops with pupils and taught them about iconography and spoke about the icons which are now in the school chapel.
