Brain Awareness Speakezee
Bishop Challoner School joined ten schools in the Independent Schools Association and their partner schools in the maintained sector during Brain Awareness Week from 13 to 19 March. On15 March, students from Bonus Pastor Catholic College, Langley Park School for Boys, and St Ursula’s Convent School came to Bishop Challoner School to hear from expert speaker and neuroscientist Dr Joseph Devlin.
Dr Devlin is Head of Experimental Psychology at University College London and he spoke to the GCSE and A Level Science students about his brain research and about some myths and misconceptions related to the application of brain science in education.
Paula Anderson, Headteacher, was 'delighted to be hosting this new joint initiative and working in partnership with three other schools. I hope that this launch will forge strong links for the future and enable us all to work together’.
Professor Hood is well known as the presenter of the Royal institution Christmas lectures in 2011, which you can listen to here. He has established an organisation committed to promoting engagement between university researchers and schools. His Speakezee organisation is a searchable database of academic expert speakers; a not-for-profit community interest company supported by the University of Bristol and other sponsors. At its heart is the desire to help speakers engage with their audience and to make it easier for organisers to find relevant experts to talk at their event, whatever the size.
Adds Paula Anderson, ‘We are honoured and grateful to Dr Joseph Devlin for the time that he took to come and talk to our students’.
