Year 6 flag project commended by Bob Stewart MP
Bishop Challoner School in Beckenham was one of 650 schools selected from across the United Kingdom to take part in a unique project that aims to connect young people with the democratic process and heritage.
To mark the de Montfort parliament anniversary, where elected representatives of the shires and the boroughs came together for the first time, Parliament has selected a primary school in every constituency to create a flag that represents their area or community. This project forms part of Parliament’s 2015 ‘Parliament in the Making’ programme.
Bishop Challoner pupils in Year 6 have created a flag representing the Beckenham constituency and Bob Stewart visited to congratulate them saying “I am very impressed with Bishop Challoner’s commitment to learning about Simon de Montfort in establishing parliament in 1265’. Meeting Bob Stewart MP further enhanced the pupils’ understanding of democracy. Their flag design depicts the different members of the Beckenham community and the green open spaces and blue sky.
