Welcome from the Director of the Junior School
Bishop Challoner Junior School is one-form entry school with a maximum of 22 pupils in each class. Highly motivated and dedicated class teachers ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in a safe, secure and stimulating environment. Classes are small enough for every child to receive individual attention, while benefiting from healthy competition.
We aim to provide an all-round education where pupils are stimulated and challenged well beyond the boundaries of the National Curriculum. Expectations are high, both for academic attainment and behaviour, and each pupil is encouraged to reach their full potential and to be proud of what they achieve.
We teach a broad curriculum, enabling pupils to learn through a wide range of opportunities and practical experiences. Some subjects are taught by the class teacher and other lessons are delivered by specialist teachers. Classroom lessons are supplemented with a range of trips and visits, with workshops and special events also regularly taking place. There is a focus on developing Thinking Skills throughout the Junior School and all pupils are encouraged to develop greater independence as they get older.
As a Catholic School, RE is regarded as a core curriculum subject, but everything we do is underpinned by Catholic values. This is reflected in the attitudes of everyone at Bishop Challoner and in the way we relate to and respect each other at all times.
Pastoral care is of great importance at Bishop Challoner. The class teacher has pastoral responsibility for those pupils in their class but all pupils are known to and supported by all teachers. All pupils are in one of the four Houses which are part of the pastoral system running throughout the school from Nursery to Sixth Form. The Junior School elects Junior House Captains and Vice Captains each year and these pupils represent the Junior School in House activities. The Junior School also has its own School Council and two representatives of Year 6 act as Junior Road Safety Officers as part of the Road Safety project run by Bromley Council.
By far the best way to find out about the Junior School is to come and visit us. We would be delighted to show you around and to answer any questions. Please contact the school office for an appointment.
We look forward to meeting you.
Mrs Sue Miller
Director of the Junior School
