As with any other A Level subject, there is no shortcut to success. The greater the student’s input outside of the classroom to complement the class teaching, the higher the quality of the outcome and therefore the grade.
Special Requirements:
A passion for History is of course the most basic requirement. You don’t have to have studied GCSE History but a GCSE grade B or above in English of History is desirable. Students will also be expected to use independent research skills and to show a wide ranging interest in the topics studied.
Associated Careers:
History students will be very marketable in a wide range of jobs including: Law, Banking, Politics and Government, Journalism, Marketing, the Arts, Public Service Administration, Management, Museum Curatorship and of course ... teaching!
Enrichment:
Every 2 years, 2 students can experience a visit to Auschwitz via the Holocaust Educational Trust, as well as attending various conferences given by experts such as David Starkey on the topics studied.
Student comments:
To me History is a subject that thrives on debate and interpretation. Throughout the course you gain skills which cross over into the other subjects, such as analysis and not accepting information at first glance. Studying history has been a way for me to look at and think about things outside the box. Ellis (year 12 student)
I loved GCSE History and when choosing my A Levels History was an obvious choice. The A Level course is especially fascinating as I love the Tudor period. The benefits of choosing History is that the skills that are learnt can be used on a wider scale. To do History you have to be a keen reader as well as be comfortable writing essays. However, most importantly you have to love history. Shannon (year 12 student)
So, if you like all things History, enjoy reading and relish a challenge – why not study it!?
In return, you will:
· Acquire valuable transferable skills
Experience the enjoyment of learning a fascinating subject
Encourage enquiry based on evidence
