The Aim of the Art Department is to develop the technical, creative and imaginative talents of each student so that, whatever their ability, they experience a sense of wonder at the activity, an excitement about the processes of Art, a knowledge of the wider Art World and a sense of achievement at making Artworks. Students are given opportunities to be creative, experimental, reflective and analytical. Students are encouraged to take risks, be self-motivated, work collaboratively and make their own decisions.
We teach Art from the Junior School all the way through to A-level in Year 13. We cover a variety of Art activities such as painting, drawing, photography, printing, sculpture, collage and digital imagery. Topics range from Japanese Art to Junk Sculpture, from Portraits to The Senses, from Movement to The Modern World.
We have our own website at www.challonerart.moonfruit.com
We run After-School clubs on two evenings a week where we can explore areas such as Photography and Fashion Design. We run a Gifted and Talented Club for those excelling in Art.
Every year, we take Year 7 students to Tate Britain, Year 9 students to Tate Modern and Exam groups visit a gallery appropriate to their projects.
A sketch book prize is awarded annually to a student in Key Stage 3. The Plato Beale Prize is awarded annually to a student in an examination group for outstanding achievement in Art
“Art develops spiritual values and contributes a wider understanding to the experience of life which helps to build a balanced personality.”
