English
At Bishop Challoner English is dynamic and vibrant. The emphasis at Key Stage 3 is on fostering an enjoyment of books and language, whilst developing technical accuracy and flair in writing. Pupils study a range of texts, including novels, poems and non-fiction, such as autobiography. We encourage children to become self-motivated in their approach to their studies and often one half term’s homework will be devoted to an individual project. These currently include producing a Poetry Anthology, a booklet on Shakespeare and a Vampire Hunter’s Guidebook. Pupils engage with language both on the page and through oral work, such as dramatic role-play, speeches and debate.
Pupils are set by ability for GCSE and we follow the AQA syllabus for both English (Specification B) and for English Literature. These are taught as separate subjects, enabling pupils to spend a proportionate amount of study time on their language skills.
English is a popular choice at ‘A’ level and we offer courses in both English Language and English Literature. Some students take both. English Language ‘A’ level gives the opportunity to explore new ground, entering into the field of linguistics and the history of our language. In English Literature pupils study texts in new depth. Texts range from Shakespeare and Marlowe through to thematic study (currently The Gothic) of works such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Angela Carter’s short stories.
Each year group is taken on an English trip, usually to the theatre. In recent years this has included seeing War Horse, Billy Elliott, An Inspector Calls and Dracula. Year 9 have a trip to the Globe theatre, where they are given an informative tour, followed by the opportunity to work on key sections of a Shakespeare play in drama workshops with RSC actors.
