Assessment and Achievement

Assessment

Our small classes ensure that the class teacher knows each child well and is able to provide for their individual needs. Assessment, both formal and informal, is an integral part of class teaching and is used to identify the next steps for learning. Half termly assessments in English, Maths and Science are made using National Curriculum levels, which enables us to compare the progress and attainment of our pupils against National Standards. Assessment results are reported to parents at the end of each academic year.

Junior Stars

We recognise that children are more likely to achieve their potential when they are happy in their learning, well motivated and proud of what they have achieved. As part of our pastoral care system, stars, or merits are awarded regularly. These may be for positive attitude, excellent effort, high standards of work, showing care to others, taking responsibility etc. All stars awarded are converted into house points which are accumulated as part of the whole school house system.

In Reception to Year 2, children collect stars on charts in the classroom and certificates may be awarded. From Year 3 upwards, children work towards personal awards, and receive bronze, silver, gold or platinum badges to recognise their achievements.

Provision for Gifted and Talented

All children are challenged and extended through differentiated lessons delivered by the class teacher. However, we do recognise that our most able pupils benefit from further challenge and this is provided under our Gifted and Talented programme. These pupils take part in weekly ‘Brain Academy’ sessions in English and/or Maths. In these lessons, they are given further opportunities to extend their learning and develop higher level thinking and problem solving skills.

Learning Support

We recognise that a small number of children may need a little additional support with English or Maths. Where necessary this is provided by the class teacher or teaching assistant. Children are given individual targets and are supported in progressing towards these. The learning support is coordinated by the Junior School SENCo.
